CAL plant is located on the ECR about 500m from seashore at Kalapet in Pondicherry. Since the location of CAL is 500m from seashore, it offers great potential for desalination. The water is being drawn from wells at CAL. CAL proposes to put up a desalination plant of 1 MGD capacity, which will meet the water requirement of CAL, and CAL will also be able to sell water to potential customers since the entire East-coast has huge deficit of ground water.

CAL has own 110KV sub-station and receives power from Pondicherry Electricity Department. The 110KV supply is reliable and is from Villianur – the main Sub-Station of Pondicherry. With the deregulations in power sector, there are lot of opportunities for sourcing power from external parties, thereby there is ample opportunities for reduction in tariff rates.

Backward integration

Other than power and water, the key input for Chlor-Alkali plant is salt. CAL has gone for backward integration and put up a salt field about 40 km from Chlor-Alkali plant site. CAL is getting good quality salt for membrane cell Electrolyser at very low cost with reduced transport.
